The story begins on a black screen

Super Mario Odyssey begins with a scene of Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach and that girl hat while Mario fights against him. Mario gets blasted off the ship and his hat is ripped to shreds. Mario wakes up below and meets Cappy, who has gathered the tattered remains of Mario's former companion and continues to consume them and adopt its form to trick Mario into accepting his help out of denial of his grief.

Cappy's ploy works and the two team up to save Princess Peach and that girl hat. Mario finds out that he can throw his new companion at living entities to possess their bodies and control them. He first tests this on a frog.

After controlling the frog, Mario and Cappy continue on to meet the Broodals, a set of anthropomorphic rabbits who work for Bowser as his "wedding planners". One of them comes down from their flying ship to fight Mario and Cappy to slow them down and keep them from catching up to the couple, as is usual for wedding planners. After defeating the Broodal, Mario realizes he can utilize his transformative ability to become electricity, so he rides a power cable away to another land, the game logo finally shows, and then he breaks the cable.

At the next land, Mario and Cappy find a powerless and defunct Odyssey ship and are filled with determination to fix it. At the top of a mountain they find Madame Broode, the manager of the Broodals, who is angry with them. After they fight, her necklace is immediately stolen and used as a power source for the Odyssey, and the duo flies away to their next destination.

An example of a single frog

Arriving at a desert, Mario and Cappy decide to try and figure out why everything is frozen. It turns out to be because Bowser stole the Binding Ring from a ritzed out big stone head guy, and he made the area freeze or something. Team Mappy defeat another Broodal before destroying the stone guy for confusing them with Bowser. Once the desert is saved they fly away to the next zone.

At this point, depending on choices, Mario and Cappy go to various other kingdoms. They attempt to stop Bowser from evilly picking flowers in a forest (and fight a Broodal), and then find that he has also stolen a dress from a frozen lake kingdom (and fight a Broodal). They finally catch up with and fight Bowser in the clouds, and once again Mario gets decimated and falls to an island in a sea of purple, with a once again broken Odyssey, broken pride, and almost certainly at least a few broken bones.

Aftermath of the Mechawiggler

After Mario stops being broke, he flies to the Metro Kingdom, where he finds that Bowser has posters advertising the wedding all over the city. Our favorite dyad must stop a large mechanical worm which Bowser has released and is consuming all of the energy in the city for... some reason? Afterwards they are tasked with bringing together a great band to have the best music festival the city has ever seen. That is not related to defeating Bowser, sometimes heroes just need to stop and have fun.

Our doublet's dancing done, their list of next stops includes a frozen wasteland, where they must possess a large blobby creature and force him to win a race (and fight a Broodal). Unfortunately, Bowser still manages to take the winner's cake for his wedding. They also visit the beach, where Bowser is trying to collect sparkling water, as La Croix prices are far too high in the current economy, as well as all other economies.

Continuing on, the poignant pair travel to the land of Luncheon, surrounded in a sea of pink¹ which resembles Pepto Bismol - which is no surprise considering the entire kingdom is made of food. They fight a Broodal and then possess a piece of meat to trick a bird chef into giving them a ride to Bowser's delicious homemade stew, because they don't want Bowser to have delicious homemade stew.

Next, on their way to Bowser's kingdom, they are confronted by the reptile himself, this time riding another reptile yet: his pet dragon, the Lord of Lightning. They blast the Odyssey out of the air and send it hurtling down to the Ruined Kingdom, where the dragon fights Mario directly. After defeating the dragon they repair the Odyssey and continue on their journey.

Arriving at Bowser's kingdom, our heroes step it up and fight two Broodals, then make a last attempt to reach and stop Bowser before he officially sets sail for the wedding. Bowser hat-punches Mario as he tries to leap onto the ship and leaves them behind, now facing the RoboBrood, meaning they must fight FOUR Broodals. Doing such allows them to fully repair the Odyssey and finally bring it up to full power.

The moon

Utilizing their newly renovated vehicle, Cappio Squad fly to the moon, where Bowser has decided to have his extravagant wedding. They take a detour through the moon's crust, where they wreck Madame Broode up once more. Exiting to the surface just outside the cathedral, Mario and Cappy rush in the door to stop the wedding before it's too late.

Upon running up to the altar, Mario and Cappy are dropped through a trapdoor by Bowser, who is now free to finish the wedding and succeed in his plan. Instead of doing this, he decides to postpone the wedding and follow them to the core of the moon so they can fight. This is a serious red flag, and if your man ever does this on the day of your wedding, you should leave him immediately. Unfortunately for Peach, Bowser has her hanging from a chain, and she is unable to flee.

Bowser overestimated his own abilities and gets defeated, at which point the ground starts collapsing, and they all fall to the center of the moon's core. Mario possesses an unconcious Bowser in order to pick up Peach and smash through obstacles. They reach a lightning rod and convert to energy before beaming themselves back to the surface of the moon, which is still completely fine.

Too many frogs. Send help

Bowser wakes up on the surface, and he and Mario use flowers to compete in a wooing contest for Peach. She is unimpressed and walks away, leaving them to console each other. She then beckons vaguely in their direction to join her on the Odyssey as she takes off, and Mario jumps on Bowser's head to reach them. The credits roll, and the game ends.
